Ground Zero is the name given to the ground the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center once stood. They were destroyed in a violent terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001. The terrorist attack also included two other hijacked planes. One oft hose hit the Pentagon, causing more death and destruction. The other plane was taken over by the passengers and crashed into a field. The plane was believed to be headed for the White House. The passengers aboard that plane will always be remembered as heroes as well for their selfless acts for their country.
The area is being rebuilt in an act of strength and defiance against those who thought they could destroy the heart and souls of so many Americans. Thousands of people visit the site daily to pay their respects and to try and understand the devastation that will be forever part of America's history. There are a number of guided tours that include Ground Zero as a destination. There are several museums set up that give further insight to the events that happened that day and the weeks that followed. The area is very emotional for some people, and it is important to behave with the utmost respect for the people that lost loved ones that day.
A visit to the 16 acre Ground Zero site can restore your faith that there are heroes among us. The firefighters and policemen that gave their lives that day and deserve to be honored daily. There are a number of memorials set up around the area that are very touching and will be forever en-grained into your heart. The tours are typically completed by walking the area of downtown New York, and last any where from three to five hours. The area surrounding ground zero is full of other important landmarks as well.
