Chelsea
With a colorful history, Chelsea is one of Manhattan's most interesting neighborhoods. Before World War I, Chelsea was the original "Hollywood" when film studios turned many of the industrial warehouses into production studios. The area also had a strong Irish community who worked at the nearby piers.
Present day Chelsea is filled with galleries, boutiques and restaurants, and is almost considered the anti-SoHo. While Chanel, Prada and Dolce & Gabanna make SoHo their home, more avant-garde designers and boutiques like Comme Des Garçons, Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen can be found in the area.
For some sightseeing and maybe a little exercise, head over to the historical Chelsea Piers. Luxury cruise liners used to dock here after their trans-Atlantic trips. Had the Titanic survived its maiden voyage, it would have arrived here greeted by a swarm of well-wishers. Now it housed the Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex, which includes film studios, a health club, a spa, a golf club and two ice skating rinks. Also nearby is Madison Square Garden, where the hottest national tours stop and home of the New York Knicks.
All that exercise is sure to make you hungry, and Chelsea has plenty of dining options. Bottino (212-206-6766), 246 10th Ave., is where the local art community goes to eat and gossip. Eavesdrop on some art talk while you enjoy upscale Italian fare. If looking for comfort food that is easy on the wallet, head over to Cafeteria (212-414-1717), 119 Seventh Ave., which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
