Garment District
New York, Manhattan in particular, is synonymous with fashion. Everyone looks to the city on what will be the hottest new look of the season, and the city has the Garment District to thank for that. Prominent designers like Oscar De La Renta, Liz Claiborne, Nicole Miller and Marc Jacobs all call the area home.
The neighborhood was once a leader in textile manufacturing but during the 1980s most of those jobs went to offshore production facilities. However, there are still some textile companies, albeit very few, that can be found here.
The area is small, occupying only one square mile, but some of Manhattan's most prominent architectural sights can be found in or near the area. Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building are all within walking distance. Bryant Park plays host to the famous white tents during New York Fashion Week which showcases the couture fashion of the world's most prominent designers.
If all the fashion is making you hungry, the area has many restaurants. HK (212-947-4208), 523 Ninth Ave., in the nearby Clinton/Hell's Kitchen area, serves bistro fare with a Mediterranean flair. Enjoy some Moroccan cuisine at Marseille (212-333-2323), 630 Ninth Ave., where the Moroccan chicken and grilled leg of lamb are superb.
Nearby accommodations include Hotel 41 at Times Square, which offers the boutique hotel experience at a good price. While the Hilton Times Square has shops, restaurants and a movie theater occupying the floors below the hotel lobby.
