The World Financial Center

The World Financial Center is located in the lower part of Manhattan in New York City, on the Hudson River. It is a complex of buildings where many major financial institutions are located, including:
American Express, Dow Jones, the Wall Street Journal, Merrill Lynch, and AIG. The World Financial Center was severely damaged in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, which destroyed the World Trade Center towers. The complex is on an artificial part of the Manhattan Island which was built from a landfill of construction materials, garbage, dirt, and debris. The World Financial Center was built from 1985 to 1988.

The World Financial Center is part of New York City's Financial District, the area on the southernmost tip of the Manhattan borough. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the New York Stock Exchange are located in the Financial District. The Financial District has some of New York City's best hotel accommodations in the city, especially hotels for business travelers. About 56,000 people reside in the Financial District, but during the work day, there are about 300,000 people in the area. The district is comprised of the area south of City Hall Park, not including Battery Park City and Battery Park.

The most famous street is Wall Street, whose name has become synonymous with the controlling banking interests of the United States. The corner of Wall Street and Broad Street is considered the center of the Financial District. Wall Street gets its name from a wall built in 1653 by Dutch colonists to protest the area from assaults by the British and Native Americans. Wall Street is short and narrow, extending seven blocks from Broadway to the East River. Both Wall Street and Broad Street are entirely within the Financial District. George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the United States at Federal Hall, at the corner of Wall Street and Nassau Street.

One of New York's most famous sculptures, the Charging Bill by Arturo Di Modica, is an internationally recognizable symbol of capitalism and economic prosperity. It was originally in front of the New York Stock Exchange, and is now in Bowling Green. Bowling Green is the traditional starting point for ticker-tape parades down Broadway. The World Financial Center has over 40 retail shops and restaurants. Throughout the year music and arts events are hosted in the Winter Garden. The Winter Garden was extensively damaged in the September 11 terrorist attacks, and has since been completely renovated. There are many tourist attractions near the World Financial Center, including:
The Museum of American Finance, New York City Police Museum, South Street Seaport Historic District, the Skyscraper Museum, and the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

The World Financial Center has been used in several movies. The movie, Wall Street, epitomized the insider trading and shady corporate deals that go on in New York City. American Psycho is the story of a 1980s Wall Street broker and serial killer. In National Treasure, the characters go to Trinity Church on Wall Street to find a clue to lost treasure. In Die Hard with a Vengeance, thieves break into the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to steal gold bullion.
