Jacob K. Javits Convention Center Guide from New York Hotels
The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is New York City's major exposition facility. Located on the West Side, on Eleventh Avenue, between 34th and 38th Streets, the building opened in 1986 and was named after New York Senator Jacob K. Javits, who had died that year. The convention center has played host to thousands of shows and special events in its twenty three year history, and is a regular stop for many of the top 200 trade shows traveling around the country.
The Center's exhibition space is 760,000 square feet and is easily divided into nine separate, self-contained halls, allowing for multiple shows to be run simultaneously. Within the confines of the Center is a Special Events Hall, which seats up to 3,200 guests for theater-style seating and 1,700 for banquets. The Crystal Palace is a15-story structure overlooking the Hudson River, and offers a great setting for all types of functions. The 45,000 square foot Galleria, located on the fourth floor, is a magnificent setting for any gala, and within its confines lies the spectacular, glass enclosed River Pavilion.
The construction of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center was the culmination of a controversial project to transform much of the city's infrastructure. When it opened, the Convention Center replaced the old New York Coliseum, and paved the way for new construction projects at the Coliseum's former site at Columbus Circle. Designed by architect I. M. Pei, the mammoth steel and glass structure is contemporary in design and an eye-popping spectacle. A multi-million dollar renovation project began in October 2006, and is expected to be completed in 2014.
The exhibitions at the Javits Center are wide ranging in appeal, attracting approximately 3.5 million visitors per year to its halls. Upcoming events being held at the Center include the Web 2.0 Expo, The Accessories Show, a Poly Floor Roller Hockey Tournament, and The New York International Boat Show. Toy fairs, travel expos, and all sorts of other trade shows visit the Convention Center year-round.
The Jacob Javits Convention Center is conveniently located in central New York City, with a great number of amenities and accommodations available within walking distance. Many restaurants and hotels are located nearby and can be accessed on foot or via a short taxi ride.Visitors can also dine within the confines of the exposition center atany of several eating establishments, including the two Food Courts and other eateries.
Getting to the Javits Center is relatively simple. The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority offers bus and subway service close to the hall, and a ferry service operates to Port Imperial at 38th Street, just behind the building. Many parking lots are conveniently located in the areas around the Center, as well.
