Harlem Week
What started out in 1974 as Harlem Day has now turned into a weeklong event called Harlem Week. It serves as way to promote the colorful history of the area and showcase a community which has contributed much to America. Millions visit Brooklyn for the event, making it one of the largest cultural events in the country.
The event, which covers most of the month of August, showcases a wide variety of things including a children's fair, black college expo, an auto show and a high school basketball classic. While some events are invitation only, most are free and open to the public.
