New York City Marathon
Stretching over 26.2 miles (42,195 meters), the New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world. The race is also the largest marathon run ever, with over 37,000 participants last year. The race has gained so much popularity that organizers choose participants on by a lottery system giving preference to previous runners.
The race is a scenic run through New York’s five boroughs, starting at Staten Island before moving to Manhattan, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx and back to Manhattan again before concluding at Central Park near Tavern on the Green.
Over two million spectators cheer participants along the route, while millions more watch from home. Over $700,000 in prizes in handed out to the winners of the marathon.
