For all of the sacrifices made by the Jewish people throughout history there are many memorials. This one is worth seeing. The Museum of Jewish Heritage is located at 36 Battery place near the southern tip of Manhattan. Although missing from many travel guides this is a recommended stop.
The museum got a facelift while being expanded in 2003. It now has all the interactive compliments of a modern museum; complete with audio commentary from Meryl Streep to help navigate the wealth of information. The museum is funded and updated by people that are emotionally attached to the subject, therefore the artifacts are pertinent, the information is well laid out, and the story is intentionally told.
Academy award winning movie ´´Schindler's List´´ is based on actual events. The Diary of Anne Frank was written by Anne Frank and is a work of non fiction. The Museum of Jewish Heritage is just another example of truth being stranger, and in this case, crueler than fiction.
The Museum consists of 3 permanent exhibits each given its own floor, and one changing exhibit that is able to cover a subject in more detail. The exhibit on view through February 2010 is entitled ´´Swastika and Jim Crow: Jewish Refugee Scholars at Black Colleges´´. These exhibits will give you a broad background of Jewish life a century ago, the war against the Jewish people and the resultant Jewish renewal. In the revolving exhibit you will be able to delve deeper into a more detailed facet of the Jewish experience.
If you want to learn more about the Jewish experience don't leave without visiting the gift shop. There you may want to pick up a book that relates to the personal accounts touched upon in the museum entitled To Life: 36 Stories of Memory and Hope.
As a tourist in Manhattan there is so much to see and do. Don't worry; The Museum of Jewish Heritage will not take up too much of your time. Take a little time to reflect on what you have just experienced in the tranquil Garden of Stones, courtesy of the 2003 expansion. Also, like so many other culinary delights in New York, the café is worth visiting, and of course it is Kosher.
If you are looking for hotel accommodations in the area try Club Quarters at 52 Williams St. You will be within .5 miles of the museum which is part of the financial district. It also means that you are near the ferry which takes you to the statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, both of which are must sees for tourists. If you don't mind paying a little more for truly posh accommodations and want to be within a stones throw of the museum then try the Ritz Carlton in Battery Park.
Whether you are walking, taking the subway, or taking a cab just head south to Battery Park. When you get out there are many tourist sights at your fingertips, only those in the know will visit this gem.
