Battery Park Guide from New York Hotels
Located in Financial District, Battery Park was built in 1693. The British as rulers put up cannons at the Battery to guard New York. The park is named after the battery of cannons which played a major role in guarding the city in the Revolutionary War, the war of 1812 and the Civil War. Today, the park is a favorite summer destination for New Yorkers when free concerts and other interesting events are held.
While you are there, visit the Museum of Jewish Heritage, a memorial to victims of the Holocaust and the Skyscraper Museum that explores tall buildings as design objects. At Castle Clinton, you can watch musical performances in July and August. You can get free tickets for two on first-come first-served basis at 5 p.m. on the day of the show.
From the park, you can take a ferry ride to Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty. Ellis Island was an immigration center between 1892-1954 and is now a museum that showcases the history of immigration. Statute of Liberty is a world famous landmark gifted to America by the French in 1886, and is a must-see sight for visitors.
You can find loads of restaurants and eateries at the park. On the corner of Beaver and South William Streets, Delmonico's (212-509-1144) is a historic restaurant with a loyal following. It is better to call in reservations to dine at this 1820 restaurant. For a less serious eat, go over to Rise at Ritz-Carlton on 2 West Street. This award-winning restaurant has modern interiors and serves some of the best cocktails around. Not just that, you can take in awe-aspiring views of the New York harbor and the Statute of Liberty along with your food and drinks.
Embassy Suites Hotel New York City is an all suites hotel which offers great dining and drinking options along with an on-site movie theater. The trendsetters will love the high fashion Tribeca Grand Hotel close to trendy shopping, fine dining and the art galleries of SoHo.
