Shea Stadium New York

This New York stadium was built at a cost of $28.5 million and designed by architect Praeger-Kavanaugh-Waterbury; it was built as the first all-purpose stadium that could host both baseball and football games.

The stadium is named after a popular attorney, William A. Shea, who led the drive to bring National League Baseball back to New York after the departure of the Dodgers and Giants in 1957.

Shea Stadium opened on April 17, 1964 in Flushing, Queens as the New York Mets played the Pittsburgh Pirates before 48,736 fans and has served as home to the Met since then. In 1965, the Mets won the World Series right in Shea.

Shea Stadium has hosted many political and religious events. Pope John Paul II has addressed religious gatherings here. On August 15, 1965 a screaming crowd of over 60,000 Beatles fans packed the stadium for the first major outdoor concert of the city. It was at this spot in 1973, when O.J. Simpson ran back to gain 2,000 yards in a single season. He is the only player to date to do so.

You can find basic eats at the food stands, but in case you want to have serious food, there is The Melting Pot (212) 685-2229 at 311 E 25th St. that you can try. Or you may want to take the 7 train to 77 and Broadway, where you can find many diverse dining options.

There are many hotels near Shea to choose from. Within a mile, you can find the 2 star Comfort Inn Flushing, which is cheaper than the 3 star Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel. The Sheraton with all its modern business amenities offers a great stay for business executives.
