Yankee Stadium New York

Upon entering Yankee Stadium, visitors are greeted by a giant 138-foot baseball bat known as the Louisville Slugger. This stadium with its outstanding history has been a venue for many famous boxing fights, football games, rock concerts, religious gatherings and, of course, baseball games.

Between 1950 and late 1980s, the stadium held religious conventions of the Jehovah's Witnesses with turn outs in hundreds of thousand. Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II have celebrated Mass here, while Billy Joel and later Pink Floyd had sold out concerts at this spot. The stadium's seating capacity is approximately 58,000 and it was the first in the country to display an electronic scoreboard.

While you are there, see the Monument Park that showcases the old great Yankee numbers and plaques. Tours are available during the day for fans who really want to learn more about the home of the New York Yankees.

From the stadium go and see the home of the famous "Showtime" and "Amateur Night at the Apollo". The Apollo Theater (212-531-5305) has showcased performances by Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis, Jr., Stevie Wonder and the Jackson Five. It is a good idea to call for show times ahead of time.

To cure your hunger, you may want to go over to Charles' Southern Style Kitchen (212-926-4313) that serves up some of the best Southern cuisine around. Enjoy oxtails, collards and fried okra. Nearby, a mile south from here, you can find Smoke, known as the best Upper West Side live jazz club. Have your favorite cocktails at this swanky spot, while the upcoming musicians perform.

The 4 star Beekman Tower is an Art Deco hotel just two blocks from the United Nations. Fine dining restaurants and designer shops are a short stroll away. Theater lovers would like to stay at the all suite Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square NYC, where they can get great views of Times Square and just walk down to watch a performance.
