Since its start in 1880, the Metropolitan Opera has been one of the world’s leading opera companies. This is due to the top class performances by world class artists, superior orchestral and choral musicians, and big repertoire.
In the early years, the Metropolitan changed its style several times, first performing all works in Italian, then everything in German and later it was decided to perform all works in their original language with some exceptions.
Famous artists such as Enrico Caruso, Placido Domingo and Christine Nilsson have sung leading roles here while Arturo Toscanini, Gustav Mahler, Artur Bodanzky, Bruno Walter, and Dimitri Mitropoulos have been its most well-known conductors.
The Met is also into live radio broadcasts. Their first broadcast was heard on December 25, 1931, which was a rendition of Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. The Met later founded its own Metropolitan Opera Radio Network which is now heard globally.
The closest attraction to The Opera House is the famous Central Park, a favorite destination for walkers, joggers and roller bladers. Nearby, Josephina (212-799-1000) is a nice place for a pre-show meal, where the walls are adorned in lush landscapes and warm colors.
The neighborhood also serves as home to Trump International Hotel, one of the Leading Hotels of the World. Here you can live like a king with the best of luxury and amenities at your disposal. On the other hand, budget travelers will like Comfort Inn Central Park West that offers a comfortable stay.
