French benches, colorful flower gardens, open green spaces make Bryant Park a serene place to relax and watch the world go by.
In 1874, this park was named after poet William Cullen Bryant. George Washington’s troops fought the British soldiers here during the Revolutionary War and Union soldiers trained here during the Civil War. The site was designated as a public park in 1874. It was renovated in 1990s and now serves as a Midtown oasis.
You can watch free movies, concerts and fashion shows at the park. For your palette, various types of cuisines are available at the many eateries and restaurants, including Bryant Park Grill and the Bryant Park Café. Since 2002, visitors enjoy free WiFi through out the park. In September and February, New York Fashion Week is held in enormous white tents here.
If you are there in summers, look up the Bryant Park Summer Film Festival by HBO. Sit on the lawn and watch movies on a gigantic screen. Another interesting event Fetes de Noel, takes place from the day after Thanksgiving to New Years Day, when more than a 100 small shops can be seen thronged by visitors.
Sushi lovers would be delighted to see the large portions at Sushi Zen (212-302-0707), located between Broadway and 6th on 44th Street. Dine in the casual ambience and enjoy Asian and Japanese cuisine at its best. From there, take a walk eastward to Jimmy’s Corner. This non-smoking sports bar with a blue collar crowd is a nice place to unwind with a few beers. At the Cellar Bar, located at Bryant Park Hotel, 40 W 40th St., you can enjoy some light fare. The crowd here is up-heeled and the interiors very chic and voguish.
Across from the park, The Bryant Park Hotel is a very fashionable boutique hotel. Known as one of the top hotels of New York, this place brings you close to Grand Central Station and Times Square.
